Sibande, Mary

Monument to an Absence

  • Sanguine on paper
  • Signed, dated 2005, inscribed

Monument to an Absence questions who is remembered in public space and who is excluded from national memory. Sibande replaces heroic monumentality with absence, giving form to the missing horse, father figure and overlooked black women’s bodies. At eye level, the armoured Red Figure makes absence visible, grounded and powerful.
